1. Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow

   The first feature based on the popular adventure-comedy Naruto, Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow takes knuckle-headed ninja-in-training Naruto Uzumaki to an unexpected place: a film set. With Sakura, Sasuke, and Kakashi-sensei, he must protect Yukie Fujikaze, the temperamental star of a series of period melodramas. Yukie is rude to her fans (including Naruto), throws tantrums, gets drunk, and mistreats her co-workers. But she doesn’t seem to be in any danger until the director decides to shoot her new film in the Land of Snow. In the frozen north, the ninja bodyguards discover Yukie is really Koyuki Kazehana, the long-lost princess of an icebound realm that’s been usurped by her evil uncle Doto. Naruto and his friends use exotic jutsu (and plain brute strength) to defeat Doto’s minions. The Naruto TV series takes place in a timeless Neverland, and the regular characters feel out of place in a modern setting, making jokes about movie-making. 2. Naruto the Movie – 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel

   The Legend of the Stone of Gelel (2005) follows the cast of the popular comedy-adventure Naruto on what should be an extremely simple mission: returning a missing ferret to its owner. But no mission is simple when knuckle-headed ninja-in-training Naruto Uzumaki is involved. Soon, he, Sakura, and Shikamaru (not Sosuke) are battling Temujin, a mysterious young warrior in Western medieval armor. At the behest of his lord Master Haido, Temujin is seeking the legendary Stones of Gelel, which bestow unimaginable power on the possessor–power the ninjas can’t allow Haido to have. The second Naruto movie suffers from an underdeveloped story: the viewer never learns the source of the Stones’ power, nor the origins of Master Haido and his nefarious crew. Although Naruto wins out through a mixture of determination, integrity, and mule-headed stubbornness, the most exciting jutsu are employed by Gaara of the Sand Village, a former enemy who becomes an ally. Legend of the Stone of Gelel is more satisfying than the incongruous Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (2004), which moved the characters to modern Hollywood. But neither film captures all the fun of the broadcast series. The disc of extras includes some rather standard making-of mini-documentaries, the storyboards for the film, the Japanese trailers, and a trailer for the third Naruto feature, Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom.(Rated T+ Older Teen; suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) –Charles Solomon

   Naruto, Shikamaru and Sakura are in the middle of returning a lost ferret to its owner–the easiest mission ever. Or so they think! When a young knight, Temujin, attacks them out of nowhere, they are drawn into a fierce struggle over a treasure harboring legendary power–the Stone of Gelel. Temujin’s master wants to use the stone’s power to create a utopia, while the last of the clan who once controlled the stone wants to keep it sealed away forever. Naruto and the others, along with help from Gaara and Kankuro, must protect the stone from those who want to misuse its power. When the dream of utopia becomes a nightmare, it’ll take a ninja to set things right!

   Good Naruto Movie. When I watched this movie a year or so ago I thought it was a pretty decent addition to the Naruto movies. Now, its finally available in America to buy. Its great that still keep the original Japanese audio for fans (like me) who prefer to listen to it in its intended language. The only thing that bothers me (which I’m sure hasn’t been fixed for this release) is when you play the English subtitles for the Japanese audio. the names are still written “Naruto Uzumaki” or “Sasuke Uchiha” yet your ears just cleary heard “Uzumaki Naruto” and “Uchiha Sasuke”. It gets extremely confusing, and I wish the subs had the names written in there original format.

   Forthy Ninja Tale. The vast majority of movies adapted from TV anime — especially for anime that are still running — are basically like long episodes of the TV series.

   That pretty much sums up the second “Naruto” movie, straightforwardly called “Naruto the Movie 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel.” It’s a puff pastry of a movie, but it has pretty much everything you’d expect of a Naruto story — lots of slam-bang fight scenes, a big dramatic threat and a megamalomaniac villain. But it also feels like the writers and designers were making a cultural potlock for maximum effect.

   As the story opens, the Sand Ninja — including Gaara and Kankuro — are battling a band of strange armored foreigners, who also have a very impressive warship.

   Elsewhere, Naruto, Sakura and Shikamaru are handling their easiest assignment — returning a ferret to its owner. But a clash with an armored warrior named Temujin brings Naruto into contact first with a caravan of wanderers, and then with Temujin’s charismatic master. Master Haido holds almost religious sway over his various followers, and insists that he and his friends are trying to create a utopia of perfect peace.

   Except nothing is ever that simple in a movie, or it would be very short. Naruto follows Temujin and finds out what “sacrifices” are being made under Haido’s orders. And Haido’s true motives are revealed when the leader of the caravan reveals an ancient story of a long-lost empire, and the staggering power that led to their destruction. Now it’s up to Naruto and his friends to stop Naido, before he gets to the Mines of Gelel.

   “Legend of the Stone of Gelel” pretty much sticks to the basic “Naruto” anime formula — deranged villains seeking ultimate power, nasty minions with their own set of powers, and Naruto and his pals triumphing over the baddie after getting smashed into the floor about a dozen times. It’s a fluff action anime, and has few differences from the TV series, but it’s pretty entertaining fluff.

   The writers also throw in a rather hackneyed message about the importance of friendship and stuff. Okay Naruto, we get it — friends are important. But along the way, it doles out plenty of fight scenes, colorful techniques, and a fairly interesting backstory for the stones of Gelel, and the remaining people from its fallen empire. It moves by at a fast clip with lots of explosive fight scenes, especially when the ever-stoic Gaara battles a woman who can control lightning.

   As the plot winds on, they up the ante to make the action ever more explosive and complex, right up to a finale involving a black hole, and a massive implosion in an underground cavern.

   But in their quest to amp up the action and the visuals, the makers of “Legend of Gelel” went a little too far. The villain and his minions dress like medieval Europeans, and the ancient empire appears to have been populated by Aztecs. What’s more, the baddie is inexplicably able to turn into a rock monster, and his minion is able to turn into beasts. But we have no idea why.

   None of the characters really get explored much — Naruto is his usual bombastic, hyperactive self and spends much of the movie brooding over the injustices of what’s going on, his buddies show off their special skills, and the baddie is a cackling madman. Temujin is the most deeply explored of the characters, and the writers do a pretty decent job outlining his tragic, warped personality.

   “Naruto The Movie 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel” is an amusing, fluffy action anime that echoes the tone of the TV series, albeit with some rather bizarre trappings.

3. Naruto the Movie 3: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom
   
   Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom is the closest in spirit to the popular TV series of three Naruto features. Under the guidance of Kakashi-sensei, Naruto, Sakura and Rock Lee are assigned to guard Michiru, the fabulous wealthy Prince of the Moon Kingdom, and his spoiled son Hikaru. Michiru is so rich, he buys an entire circus so Hikaru can have the saber-toothed tiger that catches his fancy. A storm at sea and a revolt in the Kingdom provide Naruto with the opportunity to teach Hikaru valuable lessons about friendship. Although Naruto manages to slurp down some ramen, he doesn’t crack raunchy jokes or pull pranks. This kinder, gentler knucklehead makes a surprisingly touching teacher. Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom is more satisfying and more entertaining than Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow or Legend of the Stone of Gelel. Director Toshiyuki Tsuru uses rapid intercutting effectively to pump up the energy in the climactic battle that puts Sakura, Naruto, Rock Lee, and Hikaru to the test. The most interesting extras on the second disc are the footage of the voices of the main characters dubbing the film together (anime voice actors normally record their lines alone) and a Ninja Quiz that cleverly re-purposes footage from the movie.    Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi team up with Rock Lee to protect Prince Michiru and his son Hikaru on their return home to the Crescent Moon Kingdom. Easy enough, until the royal family becomes a royal pain! Prince Michiru can’t help indulging his son, even buying him a circus along the way! Naruto has a tough time putting up with both the spoiled Hikaru and a saber-toothed tiger, but the real adventure begins when they reach the Land of the Moon and find themselves facing a villainous uprising. Does Naruto have what it takes to save an entire kingdom?
